Just how big is social networking?

Posted on

A one word answer to this question is “huge”. To put it in prospective, if Facebook were a country, they would be the 3rd largest country in the world behind China and India. With upwards of 400 million users, Facebook is still growing rapidly, and is only 6 years old. “Its users now post over 55m updates a day on the site and share more than 3.5 billion pieces of content with one another every week.” This is according to a recent article in “The Economist”, entitled’ A World of Connections, a Special Report on Social Networking”, with the headline “Online social networks are changing the way people communicate, work and play, and mostly for the better.”

So what…??

Well this would just be some fun facts to throw around a parties if it wasn’t for how social networking is changing the way we live, and we need to learn it and use it, or be left behind.

Currently private clubs communicate with their membership by mail, websites, and email. But, according to this article “Nielsen, a market-research firm, reckons that since February 2009 people have been spending more time on social-networking sites than on e-mail, and the lead is getting bigger. Last October Americans spent just under six hours surfing social networks, almost three times as much as in the same month in 2007. And it isn’t just youngsters who are “friending” one another—Facebook-speak for making connections and saying hi to your pals. People of all ages are joining the networks in ever greater numbers.”

So look out…social networking has arrived…and we all must adjust.

…but don’t’ worry, we at Clubster will make sure you don’t miss the train.
